Posted on Thursday, December 25, 2008 at 6:56 pm

    Huang: The China Growth Fantasy

Posted on Monday, December 22, 2008 at 12:10 pm

Yasheng Huang on WSJ: China is one of the few countries in the world endowed with the land mass, the energetic and talented population, and the entrepreneurship to become a true global economic powerhouse. But that potential has been squandered by a misguided development strategy that privileges production at the expense of consumption and uses political [...]

Posted on Saturday, December 20, 2008 at 9:28 pm

Donald Boudreaux: “I, Pencil” Turns 50

Posted on Thursday, December 18, 2008 at 12:02 pm

Don Boudreaux at Cafe Hayek: This month marks the 50th anniversary of one of the most insightful economics essays ever penned — “I, Pencil.”  It wasn’t written by a professional economist; it was written by Leonard E. Read, founder and long-time president of the Foundation for Economic Education. Although Read was no professional economist, his [...]

          Arthur Laffer on Energy Independence

Posted on Thursday, December 18, 2008 at 1:17 am

Arthur B. Laffer on WSJ: The only real solution is Al Gore’s proposal to offset a carbon tax dollar-for-dollar with either an income or payroll tax reduction. If a carbon tax increase were offset dollar-for-dollar with an income tax rate cut, I for one would strongly support the policy. The economy would benefit because the [...]

WSJ: Bankruptcy Is the Perfect Remedy

Posted on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Todd J. Zywicki (HT: TOTM): Those Washington politicians who repeat the mantra that “bankruptcy is not an option” probably do so because they want to use free taxpayer money to bribe Detroit into manufacturing the green cars favored by Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, rather than those cars American consumers want to buy. A Chapter [...]

Why Bankruptcy is the Best Solution

Posted on Sunday, December 14, 2008 at 11:39 pm

Gary S. Becker: I believe, as I stated in my November 18 discussion, that the big three auto companies should be allowed to go bankrupt…. I am disappointed that President Bush seems willing to use several billion dollars of the $700 billion financial rescue package to aid the auto companies after Congress could not agree [...]

                WSJ: Bankruptcy Doesn’t Equal Death

Posted on Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 10:42 am

Don Boudreaux on WSJ: Bankruptcy doesn’t make assets — such as factories, machines, contractual options to buy raw materials, workers’ skills — disappear. If markets still exist for products produced by these firms, Chapter 11 is the best way to discover this. Some workers might lose their jobs and some suppliers might lose their markets, [...]

Posted on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at 11:37 pm
